Mixed fortunes for eventing superstar Ruth
Last updated 05:23, Friday, 09 May 2008
CUMBRIA'S eventing superstar Ruth Edge has been having some mixed fortunes of late. She and Muschamp Impala turned in what Ruth described as their best performance together to date in the dressage at Badminton, putting them in second place with a score of 36.1.
Ruth and the 14-year-old British-bred Trakehner gelding came second at the Scottish Open Championships last year and tenth at the Burnham Market International in March. Sadly their luck ran out on the cross-country course when they tipped going into the water and parted company.
A leading light in the dressage world as well as eventing, Ruth, who's sponsored by Equine Products UK, recently secured two high-profile victories at the British National Winter Championships. Riding her own six year old gelding Shadowfax, she won the Open Elementary Dressage to Music Championship, and also collected the fiercely contested Open Medium Championship. They very nearly made it a hat-trick with the Open Elementary Championship, but were just beaten into second place.
Shadowfax is on the 'Equine Pathway', which is a national initiative aimed at nurturing and supporting horses with outstanding talent and considered to have medal-winning potential at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Meanwhile, in the recent BHS Hunter Trial at Streatlands park in Barnard Castle, Lyndsey Kendall, Andrew Otto and Richard Nichol claimed second places in Novice sections on Alizarine Blue, Rebels Gift and Bija. Richard then went on to take second in one section of the Open with Medicinal Purpose, which qualified him for the BHS final at Uttoxeter - and second in another Open section with Foxwood Hawkwind.
A piece of good news for local eventing fans - it's been confirmed that horse trials are to be held at Cumwhinton on July 12/13.
Now she may be a veteran, but 21 year old Gentle Breeze is rarely out of the rosettes whenever she competes - and her achievements have been recognised by the Veteran Horse Society which has awarded the mare first place in its National Performance Achievement Awards for 2007.
Owner Helen Kerry from Hesket Newmarket says '"I am so proud of Breeze, she enjoys all the competitions we have entered. She's taken part in cross country, jumping, showing classes, and dressage and she always tries so very hard."
Cumbria's leading Western rider Deborah Jackson returned from her first show of the season with a Stetson full of ribbons. She made a seven hour drive to the AQHA 2000 shows in Cambridgeshire and found it proved well worth the effort when she picked up 5 firsts, 6 seconds, 1 third, 1 fourth and 2 fifths and over £175 in prize money and vouchers. She also won the prestigious "All Around" award for show one after gaining the most points through all the classes at the show.
Debbie says a great deal of her success is due to the Bruce Lawrence clinics she's been attending through the winter, which have proved invaluable.
