New school head

NICOLA Smallwood is the new headteacher at Cockermouth’s All Saints Primary School.

When Peter Ovens left the Slatefell Drive school at Christmas, Mrs Smallwood became acting head and she has recently been appointed to lead the school.

Mrs Smallwood, 41, started teaching at the school in 1989. She has been assistant headteacher, and then deputy head.

Last year she went to Whitehaven’s Bransty school for a term as acting headteacher and then to Cummersdale, Carlisle. When Mr Ovens left, she came back to All Saints to take over as acting head.

Mrs Smallwood, who lives with husband John and her two children, William and Victoria near Ireby, said that there are lots of exciting things planned for the school and that she hopes to continue the welcoming ethos of the school.

Mr Ovens was headteacher at the school for six years before he left to become a school improvement officer responsible for schools in the Maryport area.
