Children from the Longthwaite Road pre-school headed out for the grand tour on Monday morning to learn more about how firefighters tackle blazes and save lives.

Manager Shirley Irving said around 20 children made the visit. “We had a little talk first then we went round the back to see a fire engine with its sirens on which the children thought was wonderful.

“They sat in that then we had a go with the hoses – they were very powerful. The children had a brilliant time.”

The three and four-year-olds who made the visit also learned about the dangers of playing with matches and got to investigate the different types of equipment firemen use.

Next week the Wigton Infant School based pre-school will have visits from a lollipop lady and the local police to find out how they carry out their work in the community.

Mrs Irving added: “It will be a busy few weeks before the end of term.”
