New school? I’ll be your buddy

Efforts to help pupils from closure-hit Belah Primary School in Carlisle make friends at their new school have been hailed a success.

Belah closed on Tuesday after a shake-up of primary schools in the north of the city.

A buddy system teamed up 47 pupils with children of the same age who go to Kingmoor. Together, on Monday and Tuesday, they worked with artists from Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake’s Story Tree project to create their own story and staged it at Kingmoor Junior School.

It was funded by the Belah Neighbourhood Forum. Pictured is Belah School pupil Avran Millar, nine, right, with new ‘Buddy’ John Wardle, also nine, as he prepares to join Kingmoor Junior School.
