All-weather hope for young athletes

THE gun has been fired on the race to get an all-weather athletics track in Allerdale.

Big plans: Ken Congdon, Workington Sports Council, team GB athlete Laura Park, 16, from Maryport and Tony Wareing, chairman of Workington Sports Council

Backers say such a facility is needed so the area’s young athletes can have the best possible chance of making the grade at Olympic standard.

Land at Workington’s Stainburn School has been identified as suitable for an all-weather track.

Laura Park, aged 16, already an accomplished international runner, is an example of the talent there is in the borough.

But with no synthetic track within Allerdale, athletes like Park must travel outside the area to train on surfaces of competition standards.

Workington Sports Council, with support from Allerdale Borough Council and Workington MP Tony Cunningham, in partnership with Stainburn School, are currently exploring funding for an all-weather track.

If successful all other schools and athletics clubs in Allerdale will benefit as well.

Organisations willing to be associated with this project, should contact the sports council through Marnie Jackson on 01900 603609 or 07512811459.
