ALAN Hill won Harrington Sea Angling Club’s latest match at Rascarrel Bay, Scotland at the weekend.
Ten anglers made the trip to South-West Scotland fishing from 8am to 3pm, with each angler weighing in their heaviest fish only, returning all smaller fish alive.
Alan, from Little Clifton, won the event with a cod of 4lb 14oz. Second was Darren Pape from Flimby with a cod of 4lb 4oz, while third went to Mike Cooke from Harrington with a cod of 3lb 4oz.
The club’s next match is being fished between Whitehaven piers and St Bees Heads on the March 9.
New anglers always welcome regardless of experience, for more information contact Alan on 01900 67257 or Mike on 01946 830918.
I was speaking to Carlisle Angling Association member Pat White recently.
Pat was telling me that she and her partner Peter Callaghan had recently landed four well mended kelts on the CAA water of the river Eden at Carlisle.
Pat landed three of the fish including a very impressive 39 inch long kelt on the very day she renewed her CAA permit.
The big fish, which in its prime prior to spawning could have been approaching 25lb in weight, was hooked on a brand new Toby spoon that Peter had purchased in Geoff Wilson’s tackle shop whilst Pat was renewing her permit.
On arrival at the river bank Pat had “borrowed” Peter’s new Toby and started fishing with it and when Pat announced that she thought she had snagged the bottom just downstream of the Suspension Bridge in Rickerby Park, Peter was not very happy to say the least, the price of Toby’s suddenly becoming the topic of conversation.
He was unhappier still when the snag started moving and putting up a spirited fight that for a while had him thinking it might be a Springer!
Although there were lots of undersized fish caught during Tarnside Sea Anglers match on Braystones beach on Saturday few sizable fish were caught.
The match was won by Alan Rimmer who landed two rockling and a flounder.
Aka Rowlinson was second with a single flounder and Alan Rigg was third with two dabs. Liam Rowlinson won the junior section with a single flounder.
Later that evening, the Tarnside members assembled once again at the Red Admiral, Gosforth for the club’s annual dinner and presentation. Cumbria Sea Fisheries Officer Dave Dobson had been invited to present this year’s trophies.
But Dave, hot foot from his recent Caribbean wedding and honeymoon cruise, got more than he bargained for when he was showered with confetti by the Tarnside members at the presentation.
Ross Blacklock, aged eight, was run away junior champion with 84 points, Ross also picked up the Piers Trophy, out-fishing the seniors in the process and the Pairs Trophy with partner Alan Rigg.
Liam Rowlinson was junior runner-up. Liam also picked up the heaviest fish trophy. Trophies were also awarded to all junior members who won points in the competition.
Ross was awarded a fixed spool reel and beachcaster and Liam a tackle box, both prizes partly sponsored by Mark Armstrong of Grahams Guns and Tackle at Workington.
Overall senior club champion was Heather Rimmer who swept the board winning the Braystones Beach Trophy, the Species Trophy and the Ladies Trophy. Heather also won the club’s bass competition but not on the day of the match.
With no bass being caught that day the prize was rolled over for the first club member to catch a bass in any competition, Heather won in style landing not just one but five bass.
Ian Lowry was runner-up in the senior championship.
Nicola Richardson was Ladies runner-up and also won the Jim Churchill Memorial Trophy. Tarnside SAC with are staging an Easter Open match at Braystones Beach on Monday March 24.

They will also be running a raffle that day the proceeds of which will be going to the Anderson Suite at the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.
