Buckley lands first angling event of year

sea angling

By Tony Harrison

BILLY Buckley landed the Rockerhoppers Sea Angling Club’s first event of the year with a 28-fish haul.

Fished in heavy rain and high winds on Whitehaven Piers, Buckley totalled 518cms under the ‘measure and release’ rules which saw all fish returned to the sea alive.

One more fish could have seen Stephen Litt snatch victory. But the Wigton angler totalled 5cms less than Buckley after catching the same number of fish.

Maryport’s Craig Whitehead was third (28 fish for 373cms), while Dearham’s Ashton Neesham (18-371) was fourth.

Lewis Neesham landed the longest fish, a 55cm dogfish, and also won the junior section with 10 fish for 237cms.

New members who fared well in their first event with the club were James Fawkes, a junior from Dearham, who landed seven fish, and Dearham’s Grant Alexander who landed 13 fish.

The club has planned events throughout 2007, and these will include trips to various parts of Scotland.
