Mayor to end park confusion

KESWICK’S new Mayor Roger Purkiss has vowed to do something about the issue that prompts more complaints from disgruntled visitors and locals than any other – parking.

Station Road in Keswick has been a particular problem with 1,188 tickets issued during the past year, the highest number of tickets in Allerdale Borough Council’s area.

Mr Purkiss believes the problems in Station Road stems from visitors not knowing what a disc parking zone is.

He said: “There is the added problem that even if they know what it means, where do they get the discs?

“They do not realise putting a note in the windscreen of the time of arrival works too.

“By the time they have walked to local shops or offices which have the discs they already have a ticket.”

The mayor wants to provide holders containing the discs on lampposts along Station Road.

He said: “We need to put corrective measures in place now.

“These disc holders will be small, but may prevent much bad publicity for the town.”

Speaking at the first meeting of the new town council session, Mr Purkiss said he also wanted to tackle the problem of dog mess being left on footpaths around the town.

In recent months local people have highlighted problems on footpaths by St Herbert’s School, the railway footpath and in Keswick’s parks.
