CUMBRIA’S golfers began their preparation for the new season with a 10½-7½ victory over the South of Scotland in their opening warm-up match at Carlisle’s Stony Holme Golf Club yesterday.
Cumbria established a 3½-2½ lead in the morning foursomes with the new boys Mike Turner, from Kirkby Lonsdale, and James Oliphant, from Grange Over Sands, carding a 5&4 victory.
Cumbria’s top order put the host county into the driving seat by winning four of the top five matches through Workington player Will Bowe, Carlisle’s Nicky Bell, Silloth’s John Longcake and Ulverston player Craig Morrow.
The county will complete its build-up to the new Northern Counties League season with a friendly against Cumbria’s professionals on Saturday, April 12, at Silloth.
They open the campaign with a home fixture against Lancashire at Seascale on May 10.
Yesterday was the first time a county game has been staged at Stony Holme and Cumbria captain Cliff Heath hinted more matches could be staged at Carlisle’s revamped municipal course in the future.
He said: “Stony Holme had proved that it could handle a big competitive event and it had put itself firmly in the frame for future matches.
“We appreciated the fine effort put in by all concerned at the club.”
