10 jobs to go at Steads

CARLISLE textile firm Stead McAlpin is to axe 10 workers after closing its staff canteen.

The company, which was bought by Apex Textiles in September last year, said the subsidised dining room it inherited from former owner John Lewis was a “financial drain”.

Jim Kidd, managing director of Apex Textiles and owner of Stead McAlpin, said: “A number of cost -saving measures have been identified as necessary to reduce overheads without affecting business productivity.

“Therefore, we have recently announced 10 job losses at Stead McAlpin which we expect will take effect from mid-April.”

The company is also moving its occupational health unit off-site.
