THE river Eden is having a tremendous start to the salmon season with two more 20-pounders netted.
Walter Ducket has landed the biggest fish so far with a salmon estimated at 21lb caught on the fly in the Gravel Bed at Warwick Hall. As well as Walter’s biggie Simon Kaye from Huddersfield landed a salmon estimated at 20lb from the Bridge Stream on the Yorkshire Fly Fishers water, Simon had the misfortune to loose a fish thought to weigh around 12lb the same day.
As well as the big fish that have being caught there have been reports of big fish lost. Henry Lax had some bad luck in The Hole in the Back when he lost what was sizable salmon, although Henry did manage to land a consolation 10-pounder on a Rapala.
Other salmon caught on the YFF's water during the last week include a 10 pounder for Jim Parkinson from the upper Hole in the Back and a 10lb fly caught fish for Geoff Cowburn at the Otter Stone last Thursday.
It’s worth noting that water temperatures tumbled rapidly during the recently cold snap.
YFF's fishery Manager Mike Grimes told me that between Geoff landing his fish on Thursday and Monday water temperatures had dropped from 46 degrees to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
One other salmon to report this week is a sealiced 12 pounder caught by John Hindle who fished a Flying C in the Rushes at Warwick Hall.
Tumbling water temperatures seem to have affected all forms of fishing this week the Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club match at Crofton being no exception.
The match was won by Dave Gillies who after getting a line bite retrieved his bait and tackle to try and locate the fish, this tactic eventually resulting in a match winning 5lb 2oz carp. In second place was Shaun Corless who five minutes into the match hooked a 3lb 14oz tench.
In third place was Martin Chandler with three gudgeon for 2oz.
The Whin's pond match on Tuesday evening was fished by 14 anglers and saw Phil Ramsden return to winning form weighing in one bream for 3lb 12oz for first place after loosing a carp and a bream.
Phil fished peg 27 using small spicy shrimp and prawn boilies for bait. Jeff Whittle pegged on the dam fished deeper water and fishing with a maggot he found silver fish, for a second placed bag of 2lbs.
Ian Corrie had 9oz for third place and Tony Whear had 4oz for fourth.
The only other angler to weigh in was Tom Myerscough who had a couple of roach for 1oz and fifth place.
Summer seems a long way off, but on Sunday the first match in the summer Whins Pond Float Only Sunday league takes place with the draw taking place at 8am.
Tarnside Sea Angling Club's match fished on Braystones beach on Saturday saw Ian Lowry land two flounders to take first place with 2lb 1oz.
