Moorclose and Portland reach final

Moorclose and Portland will contest the Workington and District Sunday League’s President’s Cup final.

In something of a turn-up Moorclose came out on top 3-1 against Bluebell, which was quite a performance.

Moorclose have slipped down Division One in recent weeks whilst Bluebell are only a point behind Portland in the Premier Division.

Shaun Scott (2) and John Dakers scored for Moorclose while Nick Hopkins responded for Bluebell.

Portland beat Moorclose 5-0 a couple of weeks ago to reach the semi-final of the County Cup.

The reigning League champions are chasing four trophies as they are already through to the League Cup final, playing William Hill on Sunday; currently hold second place in the Premier Division table and have reached the semi-final of the County Cup.

But they almost came unstuck at the week-end when they had to come from behind before pipping Northside 4-3 in a thriller.

Portland were never ahead until David Dustin fired home a spectacular 30 yarder ten minutes from the end to win the game – a goal worthy of settling any game.

Dustin had only joined the action as a substitute 20 minutes from time and he grabbed Portland’s equaliser to make it 3-3 with his first touch.

Northside, who weren’t able to field their strongest team, competed well against an out of sorts Portland and led three teams through Michael Pickering (2) and Jamie Moore.

Lee Taylor and Kevin Connolly had kept Portland in the contest until Dustin arrived to fire them to victory.
