SILLOTH midfielder Macauley Carr was magnificent in this hard-fought five-goal victory.
Silloth attacked from the kick-off playing good, attacking football. Their players were strong and showed good movement.
They scored their first goal early on with a move that started from a throw-in on the right. Jack Wallace threw the ball to Georgia Wilson – one of two girls in the Silloth side – and she made progress before passing to the unmarked Gareth Davenport and the big striker made no mistake from close range.
Silloth continued to pile on the pressure and they gained three corners in quick succession. Sam Mulla delivered some dangerous centres into the goal area and Dale Duffy, the Dalston keeper, did well to clear the danger.
Silloth went two up following a good move that started from their own half. The ball was won by Shelbie Pickering – the other girl in the team – and she then passed to Macauley Carr.
The midfielder, who was excellent throughout the game, beat two opponents before supplying Stuart Johnson with a slide rule pass. Johnson made the most of his opportunity by t rifling a shot past Duffy.
Dalston, to their credit, hit back and within minutes had pulled a goal back through Will Robinson, their leading scorer.
But the Dalston rally was brief and Silloth again took control with excellent play involving, Carr, Josh Gardner, Davenport, Mulla and Johnson which led to Carr scoring from close range.
Wilson came close and there were some fine saves by Duffy, which kept the score down, until Davenport netted two more to record a first half hat-trick. The Dalston players were glad to hear the half-time whistle as they had been playing into very punishing wind and rain.
The second half began with Silloth on the attack but they were thwarted by determined tackling from Sean Philippou and Henry Spence while Duffy made good saves to keepout shots from Davenport and Carr.
Dalston were doing quite well with Robinson dragging two shots wide of goal. Callum Dixon almost cashed in when Reece Moore briefly allowed the ball to slip from his grasp but the Silloth deputy goalkeeper quickly dived on the ball and a scoring chance was averted.
Ellis Coulthard made a terrific run on the Silloth left, before unleashing a great left foot shot but the ball struck the base of the post. Wilson made a run on the right but she was challenged all the way by Philippou and her eventual shot was marginally off target.
The Silloth players performed well and they can now look forward to the League Cup semi-final when they will play Warwick Wanderers Red at Brunton Park.
