Both sides were unbeaten going into the final match of the season, with only Abbeytown’s 100 per cent win record pipping the Stanwix team’s one-draw season in the preceding weeks.

Abbeytown led 1-0 at halftime, setting up a thrilling second half in which Stanwix equalised, only for Abbeytown to snatch a goal back before, with just minutes to go, a long-range effort from Matthew Purvis brought the scores level.

Stanwix piled on the pressure but were repelled by most valiant Abbeytown defending and counter-attacks.

In the last minute, a stunning corner from Stanwix midfielder Ryan Elliot snatched victory and with it the league title.
