Survivor Chris Lumsdon has been given the captain’s armband for Carlisle United’s do-or-die promotion clash with Bournemouth today – a game which could be worth £1.4 million to the Cumbrians.
Long-serving Lumsdon, who has been with United since their non-league days, will lead John Ward’s men into a match they must win to have a chance of achieving automatic promotion (Brunton Park, 3pm).
The financial prize on offer for League One’s promoted sides was yesterday projected at £1.4million by accountancy firm Deloitte.
And manager Ward is convinced he has picked the right man to skipper his side in such a high-stakes game, with previous captain Danny Livesey suspended and club captain Paul Thirlwell on the bench.
“Lummy is experienced and he has got a voice in the dressing room,” said the Blues boss.
“He has the respect of the players and the fans, and he can handle the responsibility. He has come through a lot with this football club and people here think well of him. He has had far more good games than bad this season and he has improved and grown in influence.”
Victory for United against the relegation-threatened Cherries in front of a 10,000+ crowd will take them into the Championship today if both Doncaster and Nottingham Forest fail to win.
