A BRAMPTON parish councillor is calling for the urgent clean up of a “filthy eyesore” in a residential street.
A row of 20 garages at the back of Stanley Road have fallen into disrepair with rubbish, old tyres and bricks littering the ground.
Ian Pennington said he has been calling for Carlisle Housing Association, which owns the land, to demolish the derelict garages and clean up the area for almost three years and said this week “enough is enough”.
“A lot of residents have raised the issue with me and I have taken it to Carlisle Housing Association.“But this has gone on for years and something must be done.”“It is an absolute disgrace.“People are having to live beside the mess and they are understandably fed up with it.
“This is a filthy eyesore is right in the middle of a residential area.”
He said: “Some of the roofs have come down on the garages and there is rubbish everywhere.“Children play here, it is dangerous.”
“There is now a caravan on the site.”
The Stanley Road garages are overlooked by a new Persimmon Homes development – Roman Point.
Mr Pennington thinks the garages were built using asbestos and said he fears this could also be littering the site.
He said that a few months ago there was a caravan wedged into one of the unused garages and a local firm helped remove it over safety fears.
Mr Pennington has hit out at Carlisle Housing Association for delaying clearing the land.
He said: “People should not have to live beside this mess, it is a disgrace.“I was told by Carlisle Housing Association that it would be cleared in three months. This was over three months ago and no action has been taken.”
“These garages have been an issue for years, it is not good enough.”
A spokeswoman for Carlisle Housing Association said there is mixed ownership of the garages on the site.
But she added: “We are aware of the issues and we have got a plan in place.”
