A CUMBRIAN MP has called on people to spend the summer saving red squirrels.
Penrith and the Border MP David Maclean wants the Government to provide the funding for traps to keep the number of grey squirrels under control.
Speaking in the Commons he said: “As colleagues pass through my constituency in the Lake District this summer, possibly heading for Scotland, there are one or two tiny little parts where if they stop and look carefully they will see a red squirrel.
“But look very closely because we are in danger of losing that species. Our red squirrels are in danger of extinction. I appeal to the Government, to Defra, to give us the funding for the traps to control the greys.
“Let’s spend the summer saving the reds.”
Mr Maclean made a similar plea previously for a mass cull to safeguard the reds.
