HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a Newcastleton teenager who was killed in a car crash on Wednesday night.
Alice Brooks-Taylor, 19, was driving her white Vauxhall Corsa along the A6071 Longtown to Gretna road at about 11pm when she was in collision with a black Ford Mondeo.
Firefighters and paramedics were unable to save Alice, who was trapped in her car, and she died at the scene.
The other driver, a 35-year-old man from Berwickshire, suffered minor injuries.
He was arrested and later bailed on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Alice, known as Ali, had been devoted to the Newcastleton’s traditional music festival since childhood.
A statement issued by her grief-stricken family said: “Ali was a much loved daughter who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her, including her two brothers and two sisters and her boyfriend.
“She had achieved so much in her life and was passionate about the Newcastleton Folk Festival – shewas one or the primary organisers for the event."
As a child, Alice regularly entered the festival’s music and poetry competitions.
In recent years she was a valued organising committee member who involved herself in all aspects of the event.
Pauline Gardner is a festival committee member, and she also taught Alice when she was a Newcastleton Primary School pupil.
She told The Cumberland News that Alice was a popular and insightful young woman who was an integral part of the festival’s success.
Pauline added: “She showed maturity beyond her years. I had recently suggested that we nominate her for a young person’s achievement award for all that she had done.
“Sadly this was not followed through, but Ali merited an award for what she achieved in such a short life.
“We extend our sincerest sympathies to her parents, brothers, sisters and boyfriend.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident so they can establish the events leading up to the tragedy.
