Headteachers at many of the county’s 42 secondary schools have already reported that they have seen their best results ever.

It is reflected by provisional figures which show that more than six in 10 Cumbrian pupils achieved five or more top GCSEs, ranging from A* to C.

The percentage has gone up by more than four and now stands at 63.5 per cent compared with last year’s 59.1 per cent.

The figures, from the local education authority, also show that almost half of all Cumbrian teenagers gained five or more A*-Cs, including English and maths.

With results in from 38 of Cumbria’s 42 secondary schools, 49.6 per cent of pupils have got the five top GCSE grades including English and maths – the Government’s benchmark. Again, this is up by around four per cent from 45.7 per cent in 2007.

And the number of Cumbrian children getting at least one GCSE pass – any grade from A*-G _ has also gone up from 97.1 per cent to 97.6 per cent.

Today, The Cumberland News congratulates students by publishing results submitted by schools across the area.
