Repairs to nave finish

THE first phase of work on the roof of an historic Wigton church has been completed.
The scaffolding around St Mary’s Church came down this week as weatherproofing repairs to the 18th century nave finished.
The £200,000 project began in May thanks to a grant from English Heritage and community fundraising efforts.
Canon Geoffrey Ravalde said: “Next we hope to do some work on the tower. We are still fundraising.”
The target for this next phase stands at £100,000.
Wigton’s only Anglican church, St Mary’s has Grade II* listing. Writer and poet Sir John Betjeman described the 1950s decoration of its galleried interior as “a triumph of paint; a study in grey and gold and strawberry pink”.
