Firefighters burn across 7Stanes

STRONG winds, heavy rain and even a few broken ribs couldn’t stop a team of Carlisle firefighters completing a gruelling mountain bike challenge across southern Scotland.
Last month the city’s White Watch crew gave themselves just two days to tackle the 7Stanes mountain bike routes – forest trails across 170km of mountain terrain.
The men, aged between 26 and 40, hoped to raise at least £1,000 to help fund patient care at the Eden Valley Hospice – but ended up doubling it.
The challenge was the idea of firefighter Steve Sanderson, who roped in Tony Paterson, Sean Knapp, Mark Reay, Les Graham, Steve Labrum and Dave Nixon, who drove the support van, to join him.
Steve said: “Seven lads, 7 Stanes, two days, nine punctures, one tyre blow out, two sets of pedals, numerous aching muscles and three broken ribs... over £2,000 raised so far and still collecting. Result.
“It seemed to take forever and ever but our determination got us all through.”
He thanked Dave Nixon for his support over the weekend, all the lads who joined him on the route, and everyone who has donated money to the charity fund.
