Carlisle man made stabbing threat

A 40-year-old man has pleaded guilty to possession of a knife.

Kevin Oglanby, of Ridley Road, Carlisle, appeared before Carlisle magistrates in relation to the incident on September 23.

The court heard how Oglanby’s girlfriend asked if she could invite a man to the house.

Oglanby objected and made verbal threats about going to stab him.

The defendant then went into the kitchen, where he removed a kitchen knife from a block and left the house.

It was at this point that Oglanby’s girlfriend realised a knife was missing and called the police.

In mitigation, defence solicitor John Smith said that his client had only gone a very short distance with the knife and at no time was it visible to the public.

Oglanby returned to the property when he heard his girlfriend calling him and, after sitting in his car to calm himself down, threw the knife away into the front garden.

Mr Smith added that Oglanby had meant no harm towards anyone and only made the threats to “get at his girlfriend”.

He said the incident had caused his client “quite a lot of shock and upset already with the realisation of what could happen to him”.

District Judge Gerald Chalk told Oglanby that while guidelines indicated he should be sent immediately to Crown Court for sentencing, he felt it could be dealt with in the magistrates’ court.

However he added: “I reserve the right to send you to Crown Court if we decide our powers are not enough.”

The case was adjourned until November 4.
