Carlisle school on the map as it turns 100

A Cumbrian school has launched its centenary celebrations by unveiling a ceramic map of the county.
Pupils from Warwick Bridge Primary School teamed up with ceramic artist Lorri Bateman to make tiles of key Cumbrian landmarks such as the River Eden, Dixons Chimney, the Beacon at Whitehaven, Lake District fells and, of course, the school and Warwick Bridge themselves.
The tiles form part of the colourful mural that brightens up a corridor in the school which is between Carlisle and Brampton.
Further ambitious events are planned to mark the school’s 100th anniversary, including a balloon race, grand party, historical displays and possibly a fly-past by the Red Arrows.
Parent governor Sarah Hinde led a meeting where 30 parents, teachers and local history group members suggested ideas.
She said: “We want to celebrate as many times as we can throughout the year and we are planning a big party in July for former and present pupils, teachers and the whole community.
“We are looking for the oldest surviving ex-pupil to get involved. There are old log books from the school which are fascinating.
“They record how there were canings and how the school nurse used to check for infestations.
“You can follow four generations of the same family and find out what they wore and ate.
“My grandfather and great uncle came here and my great uncle was the first to get to the grammar school which was a big deal then.”
Other proposals included an Edwardian day, a sculpture of a pupil, a commemorative seat, a time capsule, a new greenhouse and gifts for all the children such as a mug, bookmark or badge.
Arco Carlisle, suppliers of protection equipment and industrial products, has already offered to donate 150 high visibility waistcoats featuring a commemorative logo for pupils to wear during the dark winter months and for cycling proficiency training.
Warwick Bridge Primary School has already received a £1,000 grant from the Candis Club Community Award scheme to help pay for the ceramic mural.
Now the school is appealing for other businesses and organisations to offer sponsorship for the other special events and projects.
Former pupils and those with memories of the school are also urged to get in touch to help compile information and pictures for memory books and displays. Call 01228 560390.
