Top student given an ICE

A student from Carlisle has won an industry prize for his outstanding work at university.

Twenty-two-year-old Alex Lowther was presented with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East annual student prize at Newcastle University.

The ICE Prize is presented to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in civil engineering design over the last two years of their degree.

Alex, who graduated with a First Class Honours degree in MEng Civil Engineering, was presented with the award at the graduation lunch for the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

He starts work in September as a graduate geotechnical engineer for Ove Arup in Newcastle, where he spent time on placement.

Alex said: “It’s great to have my years at Newcastle University recognised in this way, on top of my degree. I am hoping to join the ICE’s Graduates and Students committee soon and I’m looking forward to a career in civil engineering.”

Stephen Larkin, regional director for ICE, said: “The prize is a great opportunity to celebrate the young talent in civil engineering.”
