Mexican wave of enthusiasm

LATIN America came to Silloth this week as Mexican youngsters were given a warm welcome at Solway Community College.
The 21 students and their two teachers have been attending lessons this week and have visited Cumbrian attractions such as the Maryport Aquarium and the Lakeland Sheep and Wool Centre in Cockermouth.
The visit comes after 19 students from the Silloth school flew to Mexico City in March to visit link school, Escuela Secundria 13.
Solway pupils raised almost £7,000 towards the cost of the Mexican adventure by packing bags at Morrisons supermarket in Carlisle, organising triathlons, hosting musical evenings and other events.
The link, organised by Solway’s head of technology Julia Cooper, has developed cultural and educational ties between the two areas for seven years.
On the agenda for the half-term week are visits to Keswick, Glasgow and London with their host families, whose children attend Solway school.
Solway pupil Lauren McMasters said about the exchange: “Love and friendship keeps the link together and the link will hopefully last for years to come.”
