Innovative designs for the new £30 million academy, which will be built on the site of the former St Aidan’s School, were unveiled by joint sponsor Brian Scowcroft.
The designs from Kier Construction, named on Tuesday as the preferred contractor to build four new schools in Cumbria, show a three-storey building with a plaza-style entrance.
Planning consent must be granted before work begins on the Lismore Place site but it is hoped construction can start next spring with the new academy completed by September 2010.
Until then, 1,500 pupils will continue to be educated on the academy’s temporary site in Harraby.
Elsewhere, bids to carry out a £20 million redevelopment of Trinity School have been submitted.
It is likely a contractor will be selected and announced by the end of the month.
It is hoped work will also start next spring.
Headteacher Alan Mottershead said: “We want the best possible facilities that we can provide to educate our children but within traditional surroundings.
“We would like a complete refurbishment of the school but we do recognise that we are a traditional school and although we are a big school, the sense of a smaller community is what matters.
“So what we want is our houses to function in the new build, we would like to create a village feel and we don’t want to have huge big blocks.
“We want smaller sections of buildings around courtyards so we can make the best use of space.”
Meanwhile, Newman School’s £2 million sports hall is taking shape as construction continues.
It is likely to be completed next year.
Carlisle College is also poised to undergo a £30 million transformation.
The proposals will be considered by city planners next Friday.
Last month the college was asked to modify its plans to replace the wings either side of Strand Road, which date from the 1950s.
The college has already rebuilt its frontage along Victoria Place.
The second phase seeking backing from planners is to create Carlisle’s first dedicated 14 to 19 centre, with an entrance in Compton Street.

Have your say
I am in the last year of school at the RRA and our exams are coming up. This year we have had nothing but trouble with the numerous fights and fire alarms. Y11's are having to prepare themselves for their exams because teachers are leaving due to stress and we constantly have supply teachers that cannot control a class. Frankly our exam results are going to suffer. The whole idea is a total waste of time and is causing nothing but grief.
