Tanks were hardly a secret

I WAS most surprised to read the assertion in Laurie Kemp’s article (The Cumberland News, August 29) that “few people today know the incredible story of the canal defence light”.

Uncovered: Peter Connon’s article in After the Battle

In fact thousands do, due to my published work.

He quotes Lord Lonsdale as a source. I sent a copy to the late Earl who, in thanking me, admitted he had not known the full story and asked my permission to make reference in a talk. I also contributed to a more in-depth account in the specialist magazine, After the Battle.

The late General Sir Nigel Duncan of The Tank Museum at Bovingdon thanked me for producing the account and, in his book Tanks of WWII, author George Forty acknowledged my original research.
